Joint Forum on Actuarial Regulation announces Climate Change Deep Dive

20 October 2021

The executive of the Joint Forum on Actuarial Regulation (JFAR) has approved the formation of a task force to investigate, report, and publish a deep dive on the science of climate change.

The JFAR believes the publication and availability of such a deep dive will lead to greater actuarial engagement on climate change in all aspects of actuarial work.

All JFAR members are already deeply involved in various climate change initiatives. The deep dive will focus on the ‘science’ of climate change. Most actuaries are well-aware that something is happening to the climate but are less familiar with the specifics of the science. Bringing to life the specifics of the science of climate change in a format suitable for actuaries should lead to greater actuarial engagement on climate change.

The JFAR are pleased that this initiative coincides with the UK’s Presidency of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 1-12 November 2021, and believe it demonstrates the broad commitment across the UK of all parties to tackle climate change issues in a constructive and positive way. Publication is planned for the second quarter of 2022.
