The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has confirmed the final round of successful signatories to the UK Stewardship Code 2020. The Code now has 291 signatories representing £57.3 trillion assets under management, including 197 asset managers, 75 asset owners and 19 service providers. These signatories are the last to report under the 2020 Code ahead of the transition to the UK Stewardship Code 2026.
The UK Stewardship Code 2026 came into effect on 1 January 2026, with this year designated as a transition year for its implementation. Existing signatories that submit a renewal application during 2026 will remain on the signatory list throughout the transition period, reflecting their status under the 2020 Code, while new applicants not included on this final 2020 signatory list will be able to apply to become signatories for the first time under the updated framework.
The FRC developed the 2026 Code through a comprehensive consultation that engaged over 1,500 stakeholders, who showed strong support for the updated Code as part of a broader regulatory framework that will continue to drive high standards while reducing reporting burdens for signatories.
Mark Babington, Executive Director of Regulatory Standards"We're pleased to confirm this final cohort of organisations that have successfully reported to the UK Stewardship Code 2020. With 291 signatories now representing £57.3 trillion in assets under management, the Code continues to demonstrate its value in driving transparency for investors, underpinning confidence in UK markets.
We listened carefully to over 1,500 stakeholders in developing the 2026 Code, and the result is a Code that maintains high standards while sharpening the focus on signatories’ stewardship activities and their outcomes. We look forward to supporting signatories through this transition."
The FRC's publication "Preparing for the UK Stewardship Code 2026: applying insights from current reporting" provides practical insights and examples of effective reporting to the 2020 Code to help asset owners, asset managers, and service providers transition to the 2026 Code's new streamlined reporting structure. The guidance is optional and offers signatories suggestions on the information to include, how to explain their approach to stewardship, and what readers are most interested in understanding.
