Board Members

Chairman
Richard Fleck CBE * Richard Fleck qualified as a solicitor with Herbert Smith in 1973 and was a partner from 1980 until his appointment as a Consultant in 2009. He specialises in corporate and regulatory law. He has been involved in audit standard setting since 1986, initially as a member of the Auditing Practices Committee, and subsequently as a founder member of the former Auditing Practices Board. In 2009 Richard was appointed a non-executive member of the Board of the National Audit Office.

Executive Director
Marek Grabowski * Marek Grabowski was appointed Executive Director of the Auditing Practices Board on 1 March 2010. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in 1981 and was admitted to partnership in 1990. He spent 18 years as a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers gaining substantial and diverse international experience as an audit partner, Global Technical partner (accounting and auditing) and as a client facing Capital Markets specialist.

Members
John Adam * John Adam is a partner with Deloitte in London. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992 and became a partner in 2000. He specialises in the audit of large publicly traded and international businesses. In addition he has experience in transaction support, risk management and controls assurance services.

John’s main focus is within the manufacturing and consumer industries and he currently leads the Consumer Products Group within the Deloitte audit practice in London. John also acts as Independent Review Partner and Engagement Quality Assurance Partner for a number of FTSE 350 and AIM listed clients covering a wide variety of industry sectors.
Alyson Coates * Alyson Coates is Vice Chair of South Central Strategic Health Authority and is a Governor and audit committee member of Oxford Brookes University. She also has prior experience of providing independent advice to leading investment clients and pension funds through her role as a senior investment analyst with Societe Generale, where she was responsible for the firm's pan-European healthcare investment strategy.
Russell Frith * Russell Frith is Director of Audit Strategy for Audit Scotland. In this role he is responsible for ethics, risk management, quality appraisal of audits and professional and technical support to Scottish public sector auditors. He has a number of representational roles, including as a member of the Financial Reporting Advisory Board to HM Treasury and the devolved administrations, and has also held non-executive director roles in a variety of organisations. Russell qualified as a chartered accountant in 1983 with KPMG.
John Hughes * John Hughes is a partner with KPMG. Since 1995 he has worked in KPMG's Financial Services Audit practice and has extensive experience of banks and capital market institutions, through audit, IFRS conversions, and Sarbanes-Oxley work. He is heavily involved in managing audit risk and the interpretation and practical implementation of IFRS and UK GAAP. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1988.
Paul Lee * Paul Lee is a Director at Hermes Investment Management Ltd in London. He has overall responsibility for the operational performance of Hermes' stewardship activities internationally as part of Hermes' Equity Ownership Service. Paul is a member of the executive committee (board) of the Quoted Companies Alliance, having been a member of the QCA's corporate governance committee from 2002 to 2008, and is a participant in the Corporate Reporting Users' Forum and the Audit Quality Forum. He was also a member of the FRC's working party on Auditor Liability Limitation Agreements.
Ronan Nolan * Ronan Nolan qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1977 and is a partner in Deloitte Ireland. He worked as an audit partner, particularly focussed on the Financial Services sector for a number of years, and currently leads the Corporate Finance division. Ronan is also actively involved in the work of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (ICAI), chairing the Main Technical and Representation Committee from 2004 to 2008, and currently chairing the Finance Board. He was re-elected to the ICAI Council in 2009.
Ian Pickering * Ian Pickering is Chair of the Audit Committees for Coventry Building Society and Bedford Hospital Trust and a Council member of Cranfield University. He has previous Board level experience in motor manufacturing companies, including acting as Chief Executive Officer for a listed company, Manganese Bronze Holdings plc. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1980 with Arthur Andersen & Co.
Ranjan Sriskandan * Ranjan Sriskandan is a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers in London. He joined the firm in 1981, becoming a partner in 1993, and specialises in providing assurance services, as lead engagement partner, to a wide range of publicly traded companies. He has had significant listings and transactions experience and is one of his firm’s Senior Quality Evaluators.
Robert Talbut * Robert Talbut is a Director and Chief Investment Officer at Royal London Asset Management. He has extensive experience in all global capital markets and is responsible for all aspects of performance and people across the investment teams. He is also involved with divisional and strategic development.

He has been with Royal London Asset Management since 2004. Until 2004 he held a number of senior positions with ISIS Asset Management plc, Threadneedle Asset Management and Chase Manhattan Bank. He also participates in a number of investment industry activities including as Deputy Chairman of the ABI Investment Committee and as a member of the Asset Management Committee of the Investment Management Association. He is an alternate on the Hearings Committee of the Takeover Panel and a Member of the FSA Senior Practitioners Committee.
David Thomas * David Thomas is Chief Financial Officer of Invensys plc. He joined Invensys in 2002 as Group Controller, and has worked across many of its businesses holding CFO and CEO roles within the divisions. Prior to his appointment as CFO he was SVP Business Risk, having responsibility for risk management across the Group and additional responsibility for the Group's pension schemes. David qualified as a Chartered Accountant and prior to joining Invensys was a partner in Ernst & Young where he specialised in auditing long term industrial contracting businesses. He was also closely involved with the development of the Ernst & Young audit methodology and manual.
Stuart Turley * Stuart Turley is Professor of Accounting in the Manchester Business School, part of the University of Manchester, a position he has held since 1994. He has also held visiting appointments in Australia, Denmark and Sweden. His research and teaching interests lie in the fields of auditing and financial reporting regulation and related aspects of corporate governance and he has published several books and numerous research papers in international journals on topics such as audit expectations, audit methodology, accounting regulation, corporate audit committees and international standards.
Martin Ward * Martin Ward is partner in charge of audit and corporate finance services at eleven partner firm, Dodd & Co, Carlisle. He specializes in advising a wide variety of independent businesses, and provides general business and financial advice. He has extensive experience in advising and working with smaller entities and audits. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and is Vice-chair of its Audit Registration Committee.
Allister Wilson * Allister Wilson is the partner at Ernst & Young with overall responsibility for the firm's assurance services to the oil and gas sector as well as being audit engagement partner for the global audit of a large multinational group in this sector. Until 2007 Allister held technical accounting roles within Ernst & Young and advised the European Commission. He is a co-author of Ernst & Young's International GAAP.
